How the Etudes Came to Be
At the Texas Music Educators Association conference in February of this year (2010), Mr. Daniel Perantoni, professor of tuba at Indiana University, approached me to write a set of etudes for tuba. Mr. Perantoni wanted these etudes to work out the low register of the player and at the same time, be fun to work up. This book would become 24 Melodious Low Register Etudes for Tuba.
I met Mr. Perantoni again at the International Tuba Euphonium Conference in Tucson, Arizona in May. As well as approving the first book, he gave insights and suggestions for a second 'step up' book for college upperclassmen and graduate-level players. After finishing this advanced book, I met Mr. Perantoni again in August at the Mendez workshop in Denver, where he approved this set.
After looking over other etude books and interviewing several students and teachers, I arrived on an idea that perhaps would motivate the student to tackle even the most difficult of these etudes. What about an actual title to give a more vivid image in the mind of the player? After much pondering, I went with a nature theme and proceeded to compose each etude with the same imagery in my mind as I hoped the student would 'see'.
The last three etudes were taken from unaccompanied movements of various works from my published catalog. Please compare them. My writing process for these etudes is not much different than writing concert works. They are truly written from the 'heart' of the composer.
